Appearance:
Johan has short, light blue hair and greenish eyes. He is tall and slender, usually wearing a long-sleeved, white shirt with blue trim around the neckline. Over that shirt, he wears a short (waist-length) blue vest with a white collar, which he leaves open. He wears black pants, with blue trim around the pockets and a white belt. His shoes are white, with brown coverings over the top.
Personality:
Johan is a very nice person and optimistic person, who tends to make friends easily. He is honest and open about most everything, and puts his heart into everything he does, especially when it comes to dueling. His dream was to save everyone with his dueling. He is quick to forgive other people their wrongdoings if he can see that they’re sincere.
However, despite relying so much on his emotions, there are some that he simply doesn’t understand. His love for people goes as far as friendship; anything stronger than that tends to confuse him. He is so in love with dueling that he doesn’t really understand (nor has he given much thought to) being in love with another person.

Ablities/Strengths:
Johan has bonded with his duel monsters to the point where he has the ability to see their spirits. This bond saved him from falling to Darkness alongside everyone else. He is a talented duelist and has a deck centering around the Gem Beasts and the Rainbow Dragon. His quick-trusting personality makes it easy for him to be friends with most other people.
Weaknesses:
Johan’s strong emotions make him a little naïve sometimes. He trusts easily, which, while it is a strength, it’s also a weakness for him. His open nature makes him vulnerable for people he considers friends to manipulate him with his own emotions.
In a triangle duel against Yuki Judai and a Darkness-possessed Fujiwara Yusuke, it becomes evident that the one thing Fujiwara could use to turn him to Darkness is his desire to defeat Judai in a duel. While this doesn’t seem like a weakness to Johan (he is a duelist, after all; it’s only natural to want to defeat the opponent), it’s something that, if done at the right moment and with the right words, could be used against him.
Notable Possessions:
His duel disk and deck are the only things he almost-constantly carries with him.

History:
Johan came to Duel Academy at age 17 as a transfer from North Academy alongside Jim Cook from South Academy, Austin O’Brien from West Academy and Amon Garam and Professor Cobra from East Academy. On the day he arrived, he met Yuki Judai, who he instantly bonded with due to their shared ability to see duel spirits. He later dueled Judai after Professor Cobra suggested it and it was revealed that he uses the Gem Beast deck, which he received from Pegasus J. Crawford after they reacted to him during a European tournament he won.
He lost the duel with Judai, but that didn’t discourage him in the least. He told Judai that his deck was incomplete, that he was searching for the lost tablet containing the souls of the seven Gem Beasts and the Rainbow Dragon so that Pegasus could make a card for him.
Not long after that, the school was sent into an alternate dimension due to Professor Cobra’s bargain with a duel monster known as Yubel, who seemed to have a connection with Judai. It was while they were in that desert-like dimension that Pegasus found the tablet and Johan finally received the Rainbow Dragon card, after a duel with Marufuji Ryo to open the inter-dimension portal. Johan joined Judai in a duel against Yubel (who had taken on the body of Martin Kanou) to help send everyone back home, and the duel ended with him finally using the Rainbow Dragon and both he and Yubel losing and being stuck in yet another alternate dimension.
While he was stuck in that dimension, Yubel took over his body and deck, and his soul was sealed inside the Rainbow Dragon card. Eventually he woke while Judai was dueling with Yubel, and he was released due to Judai’s efforts. When a second duel with Yubel ended in Judai’s favor, most of the people who had ventured to the Dark World were sent back home.
Shortly after they returned, Johan and the other transfer students (minus Amon Garam, who nobody had seen since the Dark World) went back to their schools. Johan wasn’t gone long though; he returned to Domino later to help Judai defeat Fujiwara Yusuke and Darkness. Judai, however, didn’t recognize him as Johan when they met up in Domino. His deck had been polluted by a card Saiou put in it and Judai saw Mr. T in Johan’s place, insisting that they duel and Mr. T put an end to the everything that was happening.
Johan agreed to duel him, but only because he wanted to help Judai see the truth. Before the duel ended, Johan managed to break through the darkness and help Judai. After that, they went back to Academy Island together. When they arrived, Fujiwara was dueling Fubuki, who ended up losing and being absorbed into Darkness like the rest of the school. Fujiwara challenged them both to a triangle duel where he intended to pit them against each other. Johan eventually summoned the Rainbow Dragon, then sacrificed it and his life points so Judai could defeat Fujiwara.

Judai fused Rainbow Dragon with Neos and beat Fujiwara in the duel, then a strange groaning came from inside the school. While Judai went to check that out, Johan promised to keep an eye on Fujiwara, who was unconscious from the duel. Johan, however, couldn’t keep his promise, because shortly after Judai ran off, he was pulled into Econtra.
